Out there

"I wrote the first draft of 'Out there' back in 1997 and, although the result is very different from those early pieces, the leit-motiv is the same: the outer space, that great unknown...

In the beginning, 'Out there' had six themes, although one of them followed its own way and ended up becoming Nightwalk part 4. The other five are those finally conforming this work. The challenge was to make space-music, a genre as old as electronic music itself, and search, at the same time, for a different style".

Out there is space-music filtered by Die Stadt, with a slightly more baroque sound, more dinamic and far from the genre conventions.

Turn off the light: switch off, look up, in the darkness, a whole universe is just happening.

Ocean of stars: we all sail through infinite stars, planets, solar systems, black holes, supernovas, cosmic dust, gamma rays... Wonders never end.

Spaceship Earth: Earth moves in space at 106.000 km/h speed, or 29,5 km per second. Where do we go?

Alien culture: infinite stars with infinite planetary systems means infinite chances of inteligent lifeforms existence...

Eternity: scientist have stated that the Universe is not eternal. But it was there already when we arrived, and it will be when we leave. So, is there any difference?

Part I: Turn off the light

I think this one is very good. The atmosphere and the electronic bass sound cool. The change at the end is a good choice to prevent the monotony of the berliner style.

Part II: Ocean of stars

The beginning sounds like Kitaro... Very atmospheric, too, even more than the previous theme, and very well produced.

Part III: Spaceship Earth

Very electronic, it seems like played by R2D2! The effects are very successful. However, I'm not sure about the sound of the main melody [...] . The ending pads are superb.

Part IV: Alien culture

This is the theme I like most. I like very much the background sequence, the bass arpeggio. Also the ending.

Part V: Eternity

A very beautiful start. Then it becomes an ethereal and atmospheric theme, very evocative of the eternity. A very good choice to end the album.

In sume, it shows a good control of pads, arpeggios, sequences... Congratulations, my friend!

After a first listening, although superficial, it comes to my head the same feeling as in other Die Stadt works. And it's a double sensation: while I listen, I think 'it's all right, it sounds fine', but everything is very relaxed, the sound simply flows, it doesn't bother me, but it doesn't hit me either... But the funny part comes later: when I stop listening to the music, it happens that a tune, a sequence... keeps playing in my mind. And you find yourself ten minutes later humming something. This is something I always noticed in Antonio's work, and it hardly happens to me with other musicians. It is what I could call 'deja-vu music'.

Part I: Turn off the light

Impressive start of chords and effects. Drums are very well achieved, they have sharpness, a good stereo pan and they don't tire. The cut bass sounds funny, it keeps the theme from being monotonous. The delayed phrases create interesting moments through the first half of the piece, although they seem to be out of place at some points. The transition at 5:30 disturbs me, I don't get the point. The final part, from 6:45, as new instruments are added, is exceptional. In sume: except for the percussion in the middle part, I liked the theme a lot. As the title says, it's a theme to turn off the light and let be taken.

Part II: Ocean of stars

The lenght of the theme promises, I like very long themes. It starts with suggestive pads, very cosmic. The bass entrance with the light drums is shocking, I like the line it forms as a base. The tune is faboulous, very dreamy. A small technical snag refered to the waves (pink noise): I think it sounds too loud compared to the rest of the piece, it covers nearly everything. Also, it has a reverb with short reflections that doesn't convince me. The change at 10:00 is a surprising. I love the combination of bass and downtempo sequence, it goes as an unstopable cosmic steamroller. The phrase, although simple, is catchy. The return of the main tune from the first half takes us back to a dreamy phase. A very good theme, I liked it from start to end.

Part III: Spaceship Earth.

This is a theme I don't like very much. I'm not sure about the main tune and the rythm sounds tiresome to me, specially when the hi-hat appears.

Part IV: Alien culture

Excellent crazy bass together with a futuristic melody with baroque reminiscences, a really odd contrast very well achieved. The final part is fine, relaxing and stimulating at the same time. 10 out of 10, the theme I like most.

Part V:Eternity

This theme leaves me indifferent, I don't like the melody. I listened to it a few times, but there's no point.

As a final balance: good album, although with ups and downs, fully compensated with really sublime moments. Luxury sound and pads and rythms impeccably managed. Congratulations.
