How did you get involved in this project?
Director Raül Rey is a good friend. He told me about a short film he was working on and suggested me that I could do my bit on it.
It is your first work for cinema, isn't it?
Yes, it is. However, Die Stadt musical concept is also very visual, so, although there were differences, it was not such a different approach from previous works.
Which are those differences?
Basically, that the music must adapt to another people visual ideas. Working with Die Stadt, this relationship between music and images is very flexible. On the other hand, in this work that flexibility was gone, because the images can't be modified. I don't mean that I didn't have freedom to work, it was the opposite way, it's just that there were visual and plot guides that had to be followed. Also, the style is quite different from what can be heard by Die Stadt, because of those guides that were asking for a warmer music.
So, how was the process?
Director and editor, Nicolas Gauthier, explained to me their ideas about the story they wanted to tell. I also had a copy of the screenplay before they started shooting. From those starting points, I developed with music my own vision about the story, even without watching any footage. Nicolas thought that, this way, music would not only accompany the images, but also contribute with another point of view, not neccessarily theirs, that would enrich the whole.
Did you find any difficulties?
Since it is a short film, time is very important. The pressure comes from the need to concentrate all the messages in a few minutes of music. There's no time for long thematic development, but the music had to express everything inmediately, almost urgently. I'm not used to it. In fact, one of the themes I wrote was not used: due to the importance of the dialogues in the story, more music than the finally used was not necessary.
Despite the pressure, was it a good experience?
Of course. Working next to such creative people like Raül Rey and Nicolas Gauthier and the rest of the team is always positive. I hope we can collaborate again in the future, combining my work for Die Stadt studio albums, live performances and works for the screen. I can see much music in the horizon...
